Launch of the “Accountability in Action” Police Monitoring Program

The “Accountability in Action” program, an initiative aimed at monitoring police work and strengthening transparency and accountability in policing institutions, was launched on 10 March 2026 at the recently opened Regional Public Safety Center in North Mitrovica. The program is implemented by BIRN Kosovo in partnership with the Advocacy Center for Democratic Culture (ACDC) and Internews Kosova, with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kosovo and the Embassy of Switzerland in Kosovo.

The launch event brought together representatives of civil society organizations, officials from the Kosovo Police, and diplomatic representatives, who emphasized the importance of transparency, cooperation with civil society, and building citizens’ trust in security institutions through the monitoring of police work.

Among the speakers at the event were Aleksandar Rapajić, Project Manager at ACDC; Jeta Xharra, Executive Director of BIRN Kosovo; Jurg Sprecher, Ambassador of Switzerland to Kosovo; Ronald Goldberg, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kosovo; Veton Elshani, Deputy Director of the Kosovo Police Directorate for North Mitrovica; and Kreshnik Gashi, Editor-in-Chief of Kallxo.com.

During the event, speakers highlighted that oversight of police work and direct dialogue with communities are essential for strengthening democratic governance, transparency, and the rule of law.

As part of the program, multi-ethnic civil society teams will monitor police activities in the Mitrovica region, observing police work in the field and preparing reports with recommendations that will contribute to constructive dialogue and stronger cooperation between the police and local communities.

These activities follow the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in January 2026 between the Kosovo Police, BIRN Kosovo, Internews Kosova, and ACDC, which established the framework for implementing this initiative aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in policing through multi-ethnic monitoring teams.

Through this initiative, partner organizations aim to strengthen institutional accountability, encourage public oversight, and promote trust between communities and law enforcement institutions in the Mitrovica region.
