International Romani Day

Today is April 8, the International Romani Day. A day to celebrate Roma culture and raise awareness about the problems faced by Romani people.

The day was officially proclaimed in 1990. in Serok, Poland, the town of the fourth World Roma Congress of the International Roma Union (IRU). A decision about the Roma anthem was made at the congress, and the song "Đelem, Đelem" was chosen. The long-standing Roma culture is honored today, making it a day that is crucially important for both Roma community and Roma institutions and organizations.

Unfortunately, despite the awareness of the terrible injustice inflicted on this lovely and peaceful people, there are still those who insult, persecute, physically assault, and even murder them. That is why it is very important to put special emphasis to the improvement of the position of members of the Roma national community, their inclusion and social integration, and reduce intolerance towards Roma.
